StorSimple Named 2012 Emerging Vendor by CRN and UBM Channel

Cloud-integrated Enterprise Storage Provider Honored for Channel Strategy

Santa Clara, Calif. – August 27, 2012 – StorSimple, the leading provider of cloud-integrated enterprise storage for Windows and VMware infrastructure, today announced it has been selected by UBM Channel and CRN as a 2012 Emerging Technology Vendor.  The annual list features the most innovative vendors who not only deliver technology that is easy to use, but can generate the high margins solution providers require. The vendors that make up the CRN Emerging Technology Vendor list were founded in 2006 or later, have revenue under $1 billion and have an active U.S. channel strategy.

Among these Emerging Vendors are companies that have already established themselves in their market segment and others that are already making an impact despite a recent launch.  Each organization on the list represents a new partnership and go-to-market opportunity for solution providers looking to identify new vendor partners.

StorSimple is the leading provider of cloud-integrated enterprise storage, a new category of storage systems that combines primary, backup, archive and disaster recovery (DR) capabilities in the cloud. Leveraging high-performance storage with SSDs and hard drives in the appliance, the company’s solutions provide enterprise-level capabilities such as 100TB of local capacity, up to 80 percent faster DR times and the ability to run across multiple clouds. StorSimple appliances are the only cloud storage solutions to have received certification for both Windows Server 2008 and VMware.

The company works with resellers worldwide, including traditional solution providers who sell VMware, servers and storage, as well as regional storage VARs who have not worked with cloud solutions and large VARs who have not worked with storage. StorSimple appliances offer channel partners and VARs increased potential revenue through the opportunity of selling an iSCSI SAN with cloud integration. Solution providers typically see a margin of 30 percent for the hardware sale as well as 25 percent of annual cloud storage fees as well as good margins on capacity licenses and support services.

“Emerging doesn't mean what it used to,” said Kelley Damore, VP, Editorial Director, UBM Channel. “And this collection of up-and-comers and new-to-the-game vendors is on an upward trajectory that a host of young companies that preceded them could barely imagine. With new innovations like cloud computing and virtualization speeding up the pace of innovation, and technology mainstays like storage and networking branching off into new directions, this list encapsulates a tectonic technology shift where the recently founded are starting to rule the roost and become household names much more quickly than in the past.  We congratulate each vendor on the list and congratulate them for placing an emphasis on innovation and ease of use, features that are the hallmark of any successful channel offering.”

Final selection to the Emerging Technology Vendor list was made by the CRN editorial team after a review of submitted information. To view a sample of the list and read the editorial accompaniment visit www.CRN.com.

“We are honored to be recognized as one of the rising stars in our industry as we continue to build our customer base through channel partners, bringing affordability and innovation to the cloud storage market,” said Bill Cordero, VP, Worldwide Channels, StorSimple. “The CRN Emerging Vendors Award represents StorSimple’s success in pioneering the category of cloud-integrated storage, due in large part to our channel strategy and strong VAR partners.”

StorSimple Customer Presentation to Showcase at Amazon Web Services Storage Summit 2012

Fortune 1000 user experience shows how cloud-integrated enterprise storage addresses VMware sprawl

Santa Clara, Calif. – June 5, 2012 – StorSimple today previewed its participation in this week’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Storage for the Enterprise event in New York, NY on June 6, 2012. StorSimple CEO Ursheet Parikh will present the mid-day keynote session alongside BMC Software, a StorSimple customer. “Extending your storage into the cloud for storage, backup, disaster recovery” will discuss cloud-integrated enterprise storage as a way to extend on-premise storage to Amazon S3.

StorSimple and BMC Software, a Fortune 1000 company, will participate in AWS Cloud Storage for the Enterprise highlighting the innovative case study in using Amazon S3 to reduce costs, improve operations and drive innovation across the enterprise. The presentation will discuss the benefits of cloud-integrated enterprise storage applying the experience of BMC Software, who used StorSimple’s solutions to control VM sprawl

“StorSimple has had the opportunity to work alongside companies like AWS and BMC Software to help drive innovation and offer solutions for enterprises to take advantage of cloud storage,” said Bridget Warwick, CMO of StorSimple. “BMC Software has a great success story for cloud-integrated enterprise storage, and we are thankful for their willingness to share that experience with the AWS community.”

With over 13,000 VM images, BMC Software, a 2 billion dollar software company with over 6,000 employees, was experiencing significant VM sprawl, putting strain on the infrastructure. The combined StorSimple and Amazon S3 enterprise-class solution helped to efficiently manage the growing VM footprint while maintaining local, on-premise performance, resolve backup challenges and provide disaster recovery for the remote offices. In addition to significant cost savings due to the combined solution, the resulting reduction in space, power and cooling requirements deferred the need for a new data-center build out.

BMC Software operates over 600 VMware ESX servers. The majority of VMs were inactive and full backups were a costly challenge. To avoid additional SAN purchases, BMC Software deployed StorSimple cloud-integrated enterprise storage appliances that allow BMC to use on-premise SAN storage for storing the working set (i.e. data required to maintain application performance while intelligently tiering the non-working set) to Amazon S3 storage to reduce costs and simplify VM management.

Cloud-integrated enterprise storage is an emerging category of storage solutions that consolidatesprimary storage, archive, backup and disaster recovery through seamless integration with cloud services such as Amazon S3. By combining SAN storage and cloud data management on an enterprise-class platform, these solutions enable new levels of speed, simplicity and reliability for backup and recovery while reducing both primary storage and data protection costs.

StorSimple has a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services, and also spoke alongside a customer during the last Amazon Web Services (AWS) Summit , held earlier this year.

StorSimple Delivers Second Generation Solutions for Cloud-integrated Enterprise Storage

New versions of award-winning products add greater capacity, up to 100x faster data recovery and 60 to 80 percent lower TCO across larger workloads and more applications

Santa Clara, Calif. – April 3, 2012 – StorSimple today announced the immediate availability of its extended family of cloud-integrated enterprise storage products.

The new StorSimple 5020, 5520, 7020 and 7520 appliances with software version 2.0 support larger enterprise workloads and data sets with an increased capacity amount of up to 100TB of usable local storage. Performance enhancements in cloud data management provide up to 100x faster cloud-based disaster recovery compared to traditional backup in the cloud. These new capabilities allow customers to use StorSimple to reduce storage TCO by 60 to 80 percent and further drive cloud-integrated enterprise storage to mainstream use cases.

Cloud-integrated enterprise storage is an emerging category of storage solution that consolidates primary, archive, backup and disaster recovery through seamless integration with the cloud. By combining SAN storage and cloud data management on an enterprise-class platform, these appliances enable new levels of speed, simplicity and reliability for backup and recovery while reducing both primary and data protection costs.

A wide range of Fortune 1000 enterprises across verticals like retail, oil and gas, manufacturing, services, consumer goods, healthcare and banking as well as government customers have done their first storage deployments on public clouds using StorSimple,” said Ursheet Parikh, StorSimple co-founder and CEO. “For these customers, the choice comes down to continuing status quo or working to leverage the cloud, and this disruption has led to the emergence of the cloud-integrated enterprise storage market segment. We are leading this disruption with our award-winning products that integrate the cloud with enterprise storage infrastructure and processes.

“The StorSimple solution automatically stores inactive data and snapshots from our SAN in the cloud, which has made a huge difference in the amount of time we spend managing storage,” said Luke Gracie director of information technology at InventHelp, “The cost is comparable to what you’d spend for a traditional SAN array, but you get additional features such as deduplication, compression, tiering and cloud-based disaster recovery – all with a single system.”

The second-generation of StorSimple appliances, the 5020, 5520, 7020 and 7520, include a number of important new capabilities in the following areas:

Higher local capacity and greater performance

The new appliances provide up to 100TB of usable local storage, and include higher capacity controllers with NVRAM support, along with software optimizations that offer an order of magnitude performance increase over previous versions and increased local storage capacity with enterprise SSD and SAS. As a result, customers can leverage cloud-integrated enterprise storage across larger workloads and a broader range of applications.

Cloud Data Management

StorSimple enables record-breaking times for application data recovery from cloud storage – up to 100TB of data per day with a single StorSimple appliance over a 50Mbps WAN link. In contrast, traditional cloud-based backup would take over 90 days to restore 100TB of data, while using twice the bandwidth (100Mbps). When coupled with StorSimple’s ability to store data in application-level (vs. backup) format, these performance improvements enable enterprises to confidently leverage the cloud for backup and restoring primary business data.

To improve customers’ cloud resiliency and vendor diversification, StorSimple appliances now can store complete sets of data across two different cloud providers or regional locations. As a result, customers can use one provider or geographic location for primary cloud storage and another for backup – using a single StorSimple appliance and the CloudClone feature. Expanded cloud provider support now includes storage services from Google, HP and Rackspace, as well as Amazon’s Reduced Redundancy Storage (RRS).

Enterprise-class Platform

StorSimple’s new appliances include an expanded set enterprise-level operational and management capabilities. To maximize application availability, customers have the ability to non-disruptively upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0 system software – allowing applications and business processes to run continuously while StorSimple appliances are being updated. IT teams gain additional benefit through reduced management and planning time required for system updates.

StorSimple 5020 and 7020 appliances with software version 2.0 have already achieved VMware Ready certification and the 5520 and 7520 are expected to achieve the same certification in Q2 2012.

Pricing and Availability

The StorSimple 5020, 5520, 7020 and 7520 appliances are available immediately. Pricing starts at $40,000. For more information please go to http://www.storsimple.com/cloud-integrated-enterprise-storage.

SNW Names StorSimple Customer Rockford Construction as a Finalist in its Spring 2011 Best Practices Award

Rockford Construction Recognized for Excellence in IT Infrastructure Deployment

Santa Clara, Calif. – April 4, 2011 – StorSimple, the leading provider of Hybrid Cloud Storage for Windows and VMware infrastructures, today announced that Rockford Construction has been selected by SNW as a finalist for the Spring 2011 Best Practices Award Program. Rockford’s innovative use of StorSimple’s hybrid cloud storage technology has been recognized as part of the Best Practices in Adopting Emerging and Innovative Technologies category. All finalists - including one winner - in each category will be recognized at SNW Spring 2011, taking place April 4-7, 2011, at the Hyatt Regency Silicon Valley/Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, Calif.

SNW’s Best Practices Awards Program recognizes excellence in IT infrastructure deployment in the following four categories:

- Best Practices in Adopting Emerging and Innovative Technologies

- Best Practices in IT Consolidation, IT Efficiency and Data Center Design

- Best Practices in Storage Resiliency, Data Protection and Recovery

- Best Practices in Virtualization and Cloud Computing

“SNW’s Best Practices Awards Program honors an elite group of IT management organizations that have demonstrated excellence in IT infrastructure deployment. Storage management is at the center of IT infrastructure and IT management and these finalists have shown they are on the leading edge of innovative technologies," said John Amato, vice president & publisher, Computerworld. "In the face of the past few years of economic turmoil that for many meant budget cuts and staff downsizing, these finalists have continued to innovate and deliver measurable business value. We are pleased to honor the achievements of these 20 finalists who have unlocked the true value of managing today’s information infrastructure.”

One of the nation’s Top 400 contractors, Rockford Construction builds in 40 states and averages $245 million in volume each year. Rockford selected Microsoft SharePoint for archiving data based on a 10 year retention policy, and to give field representatives access to all information about projects in real time while on-site. The company looked to StorSimple’s hybrid cloud storage appliance, alongside Windows Azure cloud services, to implement an innovative cloud-as-a-tier infrastructure. This combination of cloud services and storage allowed Rockford to keep business critical applications like SharePoint, as well as necessary tier 1 and tier 2 data, on premises while automatically migrating non-working set data to the cloud. This has resulted in Solid State Disk (SSD) performance with the instant provisioning and elasticity of Windows Azure storage available from multiple locations.

“Construction is undergoing exponential data growth thanks to the use of video, CAD drawings and blueprints, and storing all that data can tax any system,” said Shawn Partridge, vice president of IT at Rockford Construction. “We found that hybrid cloud storage made the most sense for us, and StorSimple’s cloud-as-a-tier allowed us to keep essential applications and data on premise, and automatically migrate tier 3 data to the cloud. As a result, we’ve been able to keep database volumes low and ensure the performance of SharePoint.”

About StorSimple

StorSimple has developed an application-optimized hybrid cloud storage solution for Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange, Windows Files Services, Virtual Machines, and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure that delivers consistent storage performance at scale, significantly simplifies data protection, and reduces cost by up to 90 percent compared to traditional enterprise storage used with these applications.  “Mayfield, as the original investor in 3PAR, knows the cloud storage market is a once-in-a-decade disruption,” stated Navin Chaddha, managing director at Mayfield Fund. “Enterprises want the best-of-both worlds: the instant, elastic provisioning of the cloud that is available from anywhere with low-cost utility billing while still being able to give users familiar applications such as Exchange and SharePoint with the same security and at least the same performance. The StorSimple application-optimized cloud storage appliance securely integrates the cloud into familiar enterprise applications without forcing companies to move their applications into the cloud.”

“We understand the Microsoft ecosystem very well,” said Richard Fade, partner at Ignition Partners. “SharePoint is the fastest-growing Microsoft server product ever. Companies want to expand its usage from small collaboration databases to multi-terabyte databases that were previously the domain of multi-million dollar content management systems. StorSimple with its SharePoint Optimizer is able to do this, reducing database size by up to 95 percent and storage requirements by up to 80 percent. This dramatically improves high-scale SharePoint performance and has out-of-the-box integration with Azure. Users can also get the familiarity of Outlook/Exchange and the ‘unlimited storage’ of hosted email, as StorSimple enables PST files to move to Exchange 2010 Personal Archives that can be securely stored in the cloud.”

“The last decade created great virtualization companies based on the fact that typical CPU utilization was at 5 percent,” said Mike Volpi, partner at Index Ventures. “Today, storage utilization is often at 10 percent to 25 percent. This decade will create great companies that will combine the instant provisioning of the cloud with the security and performance of enterprise storage. We believe StorSimple will be the leaders in this hybrid cloud storage category.”

“We have been an early investor in StorSimple and saw the market potential from day one,” said Satish Dharmaraj, partner with Redpoint Ventures. “We see 20 percent to 40 percent of storage moving to the cloud, and StorSimple will drive massive enterprise revenue to leading cloud providers such as Amazon, AT&T, EMC and Microsoft, putting it at the forefront of the cloud integration into the enterprise.”

“Feedback from our customers and partners confirmed that we are in the right part of this high-growth market,” said Ursheet Parikh, founder and CEO of StorSimple. “Their feedback convinced us that we had to accelerate growth plans and establish our leadership position in hybrid cloud storage.”

StorSimple is a next-generation hybrid cloud storage appliance that securely integrates the cloud into enterprise applications without forcing users to put their enterprise applications into the cloud.  Customers get the instant thin provisioning, elastic expansion, and utility billing of the public cloud with the speed and security of primary storage.  The unique tiered storage and weighted storage layout combined with encryption and real-time de-duplication mean that the StorSimple solution can be used securely for primary application content and backup or archival over a WAN. Santa Clara, CA – April 8, 2010 – StorSimple, today announced it has been selected as part of the list of "Cool Vendors in Storage Technologies, 2010," published April 2, 2010 by Gartner, Inc. StorSimple, which up until now has been operating in stealth mode, has developed an application-optimization hybrid storage controller that enables enterprises to easily and securely integrate public and private cloud storage services with their existing on-premise deployments of mainstream enterprise applications.

“We believe StorSimple's inclusion in Gartner's Cool Vendor report is confirmation of the enterprise customer's need for StorSimple’s hybrid storage controller. StorSimple’s solution is optimized for applications like SharePoint, Exchange, Windows User Files & Virtual Machines and delivers consistent storage performance at scale, significantly simplifies data protection and significantly reduces cost over traditional enterprise storage used with these applications," said Ursheet Parikh, CEO and co-founder of StorSimple. “By providing an easy on-ramp to cloud storage for application specific requirements, StorSimple aims to change the game by bringing the operational benefits of the cloud to applications deployed within an enterprise data-center. Stay tuned.”

StorSimple was founded in May 2009 by serial entrepreneurs and storage networking and WAN optimization leaders Guru Pangal, president and Ursheet Parikh, CEO. Prior to co-founding StorSimple Guru Pangal held GM and VP of Engineering roles at Brocade. Guru joined Brocade through the acquisition of Rhapsody Networks, which he founded. Prior to co-founding StorSimple Ursheet Parikh had driven cross functional execution for Cisco’s WAN Application Acceleration Service (WAAS) business from concept to #1 market share leadership in three years.

“StorSimple's team of storage veterans recognizes that data-integrity and data- availability triumph all features in a data storage product. We are taking a very pragmatic execution approach that preserves all existing IT investment and leverages the existing enterprise eco-system, so that we can focus on the few things that we do well. In my 25 years in the storage industry, the engineering team at StorSimple is the best team that I have seen. I am geeked,” said Guru Pangal, StorSimple, President and co-founder.

In June of 2009, StorSimple closed an $8 million Series A led by Satish Dharamraj of Redpoint Ventures and Bernard Dalle of Index Ventures. Jayshree Ullal, CEO of Arista Networks and Mike Volpi of Index Ventures also joined Ursheet, Guru, Satish and Bernard on StorSimple's Board of Directors
