Fortune 1000 user experience shows how cloud-integrated enterprise storage addresses VMware sprawl
Santa Clara, Calif. – June 5, 2012 – StorSimple today previewed its participation in this week’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud Storage for the Enterprise event in New York, NY on June 6, 2012. StorSimple CEO Ursheet Parikh will present the mid-day keynote session alongside BMC Software, a StorSimple customer. “Extending your storage into the cloud for storage, backup, disaster recovery” will discuss cloud-integrated enterprise storage as a way to extend on-premise storage to Amazon S3.
StorSimple and BMC Software, a Fortune 1000 company, will participate in AWS Cloud Storage for the Enterprise highlighting the innovative case study in using Amazon S3 to reduce costs, improve operations and drive innovation across the enterprise. The presentation will discuss the benefits of cloud-integrated enterprise storage applying the experience of BMC Software, who used StorSimple’s solutions to control VM sprawl.
“StorSimple has had the opportunity to work alongside companies like AWS and BMC Software to help drive innovation and offer solutions for enterprises to take advantage of cloud storage,” said Bridget Warwick, CMO of StorSimple. “BMC Software has a great success story for cloud-integrated enterprise storage, and we are thankful for their willingness to share that experience with the AWS community.”
With over 13,000 VM images, BMC Software, a 2 billion dollar software company with over 6,000 employees, was experiencing significant VM sprawl, putting strain on the infrastructure. The combined StorSimple and Amazon S3 enterprise-class solution helped to efficiently manage the growing VM footprint while maintaining local, on-premise performance, resolve backup challenges and provide disaster recovery for the remote offices. In addition to significant cost savings due to the combined solution, the resulting reduction in space, power and cooling requirements deferred the need for a new data-center build out.
BMC Software operates over 600 VMware ESX servers. The majority of VMs were inactive and full backups were a costly challenge. To avoid additional SAN purchases, BMC Software deployed StorSimple cloud-integrated enterprise storage appliances that allow BMC to use on-premise SAN storage for storing the working set (i.e. data required to maintain application performance while intelligently tiering the non-working set) to Amazon S3 storage to reduce costs and simplify VM management.
Cloud-integrated enterprise storage is an emerging category of storage solutions that consolidatesprimary storage, archive, backup and disaster recovery through seamless integration with cloud services such as Amazon S3. By combining SAN storage and cloud data management on an enterprise-class platform, these solutions enable new levels of speed, simplicity and reliability for backup and recovery while reducing both primary storage and data protection costs.
StorSimple has a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services, and also spoke alongside a customer during the last Amazon Web Services (AWS) Summit , held earlier this year.

StorSimple works with HP to offer enterprises an open approach to cloud storage.
Santa Clara, Calif. -- May 10, 2012 – StorSimple today announced that its family of Cloud-integrated enterprise storage appliances supports HP Cloud Services (http://hpcloud.com). Enterprises can now consolidate primary, backup, archive and disaster recovery storage into a single StorSimple cloud-integrated storage system connected to HP Cloud Services, driving a reduction in storage TCO of 60 to 80 percent in many cases. StorSimple customers can mix and match HP Cloud Services with any other cloud storage services they are currently using, eliminating the vendor lock-in on the data center floor that is common with traditional SANs.
“HP’s open-source approach to cloud services encourages customers to deploy applications in HP Cloud Services with the confidence that they will not be locked into one particular service provider.” said Steve Querner, vice president of sales for StorSimple. “Cloud-integrated enterprise storage from StorSimple provides the same open approach to cloud storage by certifying multiple leading cloud storage services. When adopting an open approach to cloud storage, customers should insist on features that facilitate cross-cloud functionality without compromising on an enterprise high availability feature set.”
HP Cloud Services public beta offering is certified by StorSimple and supports the full range of StorSimple cloud data management features, including Cloud Snapshots™, thin restores, non-disruptive upgrades and dual path redundancy. StorSimple customers can now use HP Cloud Object Storage as a tier of storage, transparently extending their Windows and Linux datasets, which could be running on VMware and Hyper-V, into the cloud.
A key benefit of HP Cloud Services is the open-source approach. Aligned with HP’s approach to a customer-choice model, StorSimple cloud-integrated enterprise storage systems allow HP Cloud Services customers to simultaneously store complete sets of data across multiple cloud providers. This open architecture prevents the limitations of vendor lock-in in data centers for enterprise customers.

Cloud-integrated enterprise storage is an emerging category of storage solution that consolidates primary, archive, backup and disaster recovery through seamless integration with the cloud. By combining SAN storage and cloud data management on an enterprise-class platform, these solutions enable new levels of speed, simplicity and reliability for backup and recovery while reducing both primary and data protection costs.
The First Church of Christ, Scientist is a global organization with branches in 75 countries. It is also well known for its international news organization, The Christian Science Monitor. It uses AWS and S3 to create an IT utility that allows it to cross-charge infrastructure costs to their departmental customers who can choose to scale up or scale back, including storage capacity.
The Church purchased a pair of StorSimple 5020 cloud-integrated enterprise storage appliances for its VMware and Windows-based file shares. Amazon S3 storage is used as a tier for inactive data on primary storage, as an on-line archive for historical files, as a replacement for backup tapes and as an off-site disaster recovery repository. In addition, automating snapshots and backups means the IT team at the Church saves hours each week by not having to manage backup and tape media. They use multiple regions in S3 for redundant protection against unexpected service or communication outages.
The StorSimple system de-duplicates and compresses data it stores on disk. Reducing data this way allowed the Church to scale back the amount of storage they need by more than 80% compared to its previous Fibre Channel SAN. In addition, StorSimple’s data reduction saves the Church on every gigabyte that is transferred and stored in the cloud.

Availability of three products from award-winning Startup introduces elastic storage capabilities for Microsoft SharePoint, Windows File Server, Exchange and Office
SANTA CLARA, Calif. & LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-StorSimple, recently named “most promising cloud technology provider,” announces the immediate availability of the StorSimple 1000, 5000 and 7000 series of application-optimized cloud storage appliances. Deployed on-premise, these devices utilize an innovative “cloud-as-a-tier” architecture to dramatically increase the performance and greatly extend the storage capabilities of business-critical Microsoft applications such as Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Exchange Server, Microsoft File Servers and Virtual Machine libraries.
Tweet this: .@StorSimple introduces cloud-as-a-tier storage with app optimized cloud #storage appliances for #MSFT environments http://bit.ly/eR8rsR
Enterprise content is exploding at 50 to 60 percent per year driven by use of applications such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Exchange, Windows Shared Drives and modern virtual machine libraries. Each time a minor change is made to a file, a completely new version is created, resulting in an explosion of stored content when only a working set of data is required. The working set requires rapid access whereas the other content can be stored on slower disks or the cloud. The cloud is a new architecture and requires new approaches to realize its full benefit. It can’t be treated as a dumb disk at the end of a wide-area network. To get the security and performance required, enterprises need sophisticated cloud-as-a-tier management.
“When it comes to using cloud storage to deal with the explosion of content, companies need to think like Bing and Google search algorithms for storage, meaning that they should not treat all content the same, just as these search engines treat every web page differently to present the most important content on the first page,” said Ursheet Parikh, CEO of StorSimple. “We take the same approach to cloud storage through software in StorSimple appliances that automatically deduplicate content, reducing storage requirements by a factor of 10. Every block is then ranked through a unique BlockRankTM algorithm to determine the working set of data that is necessary for every day operations, while automatically moving less used data, which can make up nearly 75 percent of a business’ data, to the cloud. This gives enterprises the best-of-both worlds - SSD performance and the elasticity of the cloud.”
By keeping frequently accessed data on premise, application performance remains high and data is kept within company security protocols. Applications using the StorSimple appliance reap the performance and security benefits of keeping applications and working set data on premise, while shifting the burden of less frequently accessed content storage to the cloud. This has a major impact on performance both for regular application workloads and also backup and recovery as only the working set has to be moved to the cloud.
With only 25 percent of content stored on premise and a deduplication ratio of 10, this means instead of backing up a complete dataset over a WAN, StorSimple needs to move a mere 2.5 percent. For recovery, the volume group can be immediately mounted and the working set accessed compared to moving the whole backup over the WAN.
Unique Application-Optimized Cloud Storage
StorSimple takes cloud storage one step further with an application-optimization plug-in architecture. This maximizes the performance of each volume of an application knowing whether to store the data on SSD, SAS drive or the cloud with a unique application-specific BlockRank algorithm. For example, with SharePoint, the database is always stored on SSD whereas the content, including large objects like audio, video and CAD drawings, can be spread over SSD, SAS drive or the cloud. This application plug-in extends to Microsoft VSS consistent application backup and restore.
In addition, a redundant disaster recovery center is out of the reach of many organizations. Cloud economics, coupled with StorSimple’s unique CloudClone architecture mean everyone can now afford a disaster recovery center – paying for it only when it’s used.
“We’re using StorSimple for backup and recovery, Microsoft Exchange archiving and migrating file share data to SharePoint 2010,” said Ryan Dengate, IT manager for Pine Rest Health Services. “As its name implies, StorSimple takes the first step of BLOB externalization and marries it to backup really easily. It took very little time to get up and running and creating business use cases.”
The StorSimple series of appliances support leading cloud storage providers Amazon, AT&T, EMC, Iron Mountain and Microsoft Azure. The range of appliances includes embedded security and encryption protocols as well as tools for easy cloud backup and recovery, primary storage deduplication, and application-aware thin provisioning.
